Oct

Intense headaches I’m not your typical stress-triggered pain. They last long – very long. Even the simplest noise or light of your surroundings can make your symptoms worse. While it is true that the synthetic drugs available in the market can temporarily help. They can be beneficial to reduce the intensity of these symptoms. Yet, they may have terrible side effects on the health of the patient.

This is where using CBD products can help. Can you use CBD oil for headaches? Or, so it is claims.

Cannabidiol or CBD is a naturally occurring chemical cannabinoid. This chemical is found growing in the cannabis Sativa plant. And, that can help to reduce symptoms of a range of medical conditions. The CBD chemical has anti-inflammatory and antidepressant effects. Since it has a therapeutic and Holistic impact on the mind and body, it is being preferred by a lot of people for improving their health.

Many CBD companies, as well as CBD advocates, claim that using CBD can help to regulate the mental and physical well being of the user. And, of course, for your headaches or migraines.

The CBD chemical is one of the many active chemical cannabinoids found growing in the plant. In this article, we will try to find out whether using CBD can be any way useful for people. Especially, those who are suffering from headaches or migraines.

Is CBD Oil Legal Or Illegal In United States Of America?

Is CBD Oil Legal Or Illegal In United States Of America?

If you would have asked this question just a decade earlier, things would have been different. However, with the passing of the 2014 and 2018 Farm Bill, the entire CBD hemp industry changed. As per this bill, CBD oil that is derived from the hemp plant is now legal throughout the country. Americans also free to use products that we derived from the hand plant as well. This included CBD oil too.

When the CBD chemical is added to carrier oils in different amounts, the resulting oil is known as CBD oil. CBD brands most commonly used coconut oil and hemp seed oil to increase the efficacy of the CBD chemical.

Having said this, the extracted CBD oil needed to meet a condition set up by the government.

The condition put up by the US government was that the THC traces in the oil should be below 0.3 percent. Only when the condition would be satisfied by the CBD branch will the extracted CBD oil be deemed as legal. Failure to do so would make the product illegal. And, people who are found using the product could be subjected to penalization.

Now, if you take the above definition into consideration then there are two points. The points are as follows:

  1. The CBD oil has to be derived from the hemp plant
  2. The THC traces in the extracted CBD should not exceed more than 0.3 percent

Before we discuss the first point in detail, you will have to understand why THC is given so much focus.

The cannabis Sativa plant has around 80 to 200 chemical compounds found growing in it. Out of these chemical compounds, the two most prominent chemicals are THC and CBD. Since we have already discussed CBD, we will focus on THC here.

THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol and is a cannabinoid too. Even though it is found growing alongside CBD, it is not similar to CBD. While the CBD chemical is non-psychedelic in nature, THC is psychoactive. This statement basically means that when THC is consumed in a higher amount, it creates a state of high for the users.

The chemical helps to stimulate dopamine in the body. This, in turn, can alter the cognitive functioning of the user. These functions include medical mental as well as physical functioning of the user. Some of the most common examples are as follows:

  1. Reasoning
  2. Understanding
  3. Speech
  4. Mobility
  5. Memory
  6. Coordination
  7. Sharpness

Due to the intoxicating effect that THC has on the users has made it illegal by law. The official legal status is enjoyed by CBD provided it contains THC traces below the ceiling limit.

Let us discuss why the CBD oil should be extracted from the hemp plant. As mentioned before, the CBD oil can be extracted from the hemp plant as well as the cannabis plant. But what makes the hemp plant more appealing is that it has a greater amount of the CBD chemical. It naturally has a lesser amount of THC traces.

To be more precise, the total THC content does not exceed 0.3 percent in this plant. Now, when CBD oil is extracted from this plant, it will reflect the same characteristics.

Now,  it is only logical for the CBD oil to be extracted from the marijuana plant as well. The marijuana plant has a greater concentration of the THC chemical. It contains CBD, but on the lower side. When the CBD oil will be extracted from the marijuana plant, it will have a greater concentration of the THC chemical. The extracted oil will also contain CBD but in lower amounts.

To conclude, it is due to this very reason that in order to be legal, the CBD oil should contain THC traces below 0.3 percent. When this oil is extracted from the hemp plant, this, in turn, becomes possible.

But, the legal status depends on another factor which is the dance of the different states. You must already be aware of how every American state has the right to practice and put into effect their own policies. Keeping this in mind, we can divide the states into three types –

Type 1

States that do not allow both the medicinal and recreational use of CBD. Some of these states include South Dakota, Nebraska, and Idaho. This doesn’t mean that CBD oil is completely banned in such states.  it is just that the citizens need to be very careful when they use CBD infused products. This is because they have limited rights when it comes to CBD oil.

Type 2

States that allow the free use of CBD oil by its citizens. It can be used either for recreational as well as medicinal purposes. The most common examples of these states include Colorado, Washington, and Nevada.

Type 3

States that only recognize CBD oil for its remedial and medical benefits. The citizens of these dates are only allowed to use CBD oil for improving their overall health.

So, these are a few things that you have to remember regarding the legality of CBD oil in the US.

How Does The CBD Chemical Work In The Human Body?

How Does The CBD Chemical Work In The Human Body?

The human body has a very elaborate system that is known as the endocannabinoid system. it was only in the late 1990s that this was discovered by experts. As a result of this, we are not yet aware of more detailed information about how it works. But, we do have a broader idea of how this system works.

The endocannabinoid system is the thermostat of the body helping it be at equilibrium. For example, if the body is feeling too hot or too cold, it is the endocannabinoid system that will bring it back to its optimal state. Hence, it performs similar functions to this.

The Two Main Receptors of the Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system has two receptors. The first receptor is the CB1 receptor. And, the second receptor is the CB2 receptor. These receptors are called the neuroreceptors of the body as well. It is also these receptors that interact with the cannabinoids.

  1. The CB1 Receptor

The CB1 receptor is located near the brain area of the user. It is this particular receptor that is responsible for managing the cognitive functions of the body. These functions include sharpness, coordination, memory and so on. The reason why THC has the capacity to influence the cognitive functions is that it latches onto this receptor. This, in turn, alters the working of our brain and its functions.

  1. The CB2 Receptor

On the other hand, the CB2 receptor is located near the immunity system of the body. The main job of this receptor is to handle the body’s response to pain and inflammation levels in the body. The CBD chemical interacts with this particular receptor but in a different way as compared to THC. The CBD chemical does not latch on to the CB2 receptor. It only encourages the human body to produce more cannabinoids. When the number of cannabinoids in the body increases, the overall capacity to fight these health conditions increases as well.

In other words, the immunity system of the body gets the much-needed boost. It should be noted that the CBD chemical does not produce any cannabinoids at all. This is also the main reason why the CBD chemical is held as an excellent pain relief stimulant.

Decoding The Research About CBD, THC, And Headaches

Decoding The Research About CBD Oil for Headaches

It is true that there is limited research then we talk about CBD for reducing headaches. Or, migraine symptoms. But, it doesn’t mean that it is completely lacking. There are pieces of research that have been carried out by experts to study the combined effects of CBD and THC.

If you are wondering as to why is that in lack of proper research in this field, read on. We would like to put into light the limitations that scientists have to face. You see, cannabis is still a federally illegal substance. This, in turn, greatly restricted the potential of scientists to explore the efficacy of cannabis. And, its derivatives to a large extent. Yet, there are a few laboratory studies carried out that have suggested that CBD infused oil can help to reduce chronic and acute pain in January. This includes migraines as well.

Talking about the study that had been carried out on CBD and THC, we would like to give you more insight here. It was in the year 2017 that the third Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) published their studies. The scientists were a group of researchers who wanted to study the effect of cannabinoids on migraine prevention.

In the research, there were two phases. In phase 1, there were 48 people with chronic migraines who were selected. Each one of them was given a combination of two compounds. The first compound had a 19 percent THC. Whereas, the second compound contained 9 percent CBD with negligible THC traces. The volunteers were to administer these compounds orally.

It was found that the dosage that was under 100 milligrams (mg) had no effect on them. But, when the dosage amount was increased to 200 mg, there was a deduction of nearly 55 percent in the acute pain felt by them.

Let us now move on to phase two of the research. In this phase, it was people who were suffering from cluster headaches. Or, chronic migraines that were taken into account. The experts collected 79 people who were suffering from chronic migraines. And, give them a daily dose of 200 mg of the THC and CBD combination from phase 1. Or, 25 mg of amitriptyline was given. Amitriptyline is actually a tricyclic antidepressant.

The 48 people who were suffering from cluster headaches. These people were given 200 mg of the THC and CBD combination from phase 1. Or, 480 mg of the calcium channel blocker, Verapamil.

The entire process went on for about three months. Then a follow-up was scheduled four weeks later after the treatment period ended. It was found that the THC and CBDA combination had reduced the migraine attacks. That too by about 40.4 percent. In addition to this, the combination has also reduced the pain intensity by about 43.5 percent. Using amitriptyline had led to a reduction of about 40.1 percent. This was in the intensity of migraine attacks.

Coming to the participants that had cluster headaches:

these participants only felt a slight decrease in the intensity. And, the frequency of their headaches. Having said this, there were a few of the participants that experienced a considerable drop. This was at about 43.5 percent. There is an interesting thing that should be noted here. It is that this drop was found common among the participants who were experiencing migraine attacks from their childhood.

Keeping all this in mind, the researchers concluded two things:

  1. Firstly, that it was only acute cluster headaches that were benefited by cannabinoids.
  2. Secondly, if the migraine attacks were being felt by the patient from his or her childhood.

The Side Effects Of Using CBD Oil For Reducing Symptoms Of Migraine

The Side Effects Of Using CBD Oil For Reducing Symptoms Of Migraine

If we want to talk about one of the most appealing things about CBD, the lack of side-effects would definitely be one. In this opioid world, and organic and natural yet effective medication is a welcomed change. The world at large is wanting to introduce CBD in their daily lives to take advantage of it. While it is true that synthetic drugs can be good for headaches ok, they can have a negative impact on the health of the user. We have also mentioned this above.

This does not mean that there will be no health issues at all. You see, there might be rare cases where you suffer from a few health issues. Some of these health issues are mentioned below:

  1. Lethargy
  2. Considerable weight gain or weight loss of the user
  3. Nausea
  4. Drowsiness
  5. Loss in the appetite of the user

The reason why this is not such a big deal is that it has negligible frequency and intensity. Having said this, that might be a few cases where immediate medical attention may be required. Here, we are referring to those cases where the user is allergic to the CBD chemical. In these cases, urgent medical attention needs to be provided to him or her.

Another thing that should be considered here is that the CBD chemical can mess up the working of prescription drugs. So, it is important to take expert advice so as to not mess up both the drugs.

The Final Verdict On CBD Oil For Headache And Migraines: Yay Or Nay?

The Final Verdict On CBD Oil For Headache And Migraines: Yay Or Nay?

To conclude, using CBD can be good for your health. But, you still need to schedule a meeting with your health specialist to find out whether you are allergic to the chemical or not. Also,  with the expertise and experience of the health specialist, you will be able to figure out the optimal dosage for you. finding the optimal dosage will help you reduce the intensity of the pain that you will feel during intense headaches in a much efficient manner.

Why it is true that there is research suggesting the potential benefits of CBD oil for migraines, we have a long way to go. In addition to this, we still need more concrete proof. This is before we can claim CBD oil as a treatment for headaches and migraines. At the moment, scientists are conducting research to learn about the efficacy of the CBD chemical. Once more proof is available to us, the CBD chemical can be given the due credit it deserves.
